Four Seasons Blog Hop

There's nothing more fun than getting to show off  the new lines of
Island Batik fabrics about to hit the shelves!
You know I was doing the happy dance when these arrived on my doorstep.
I knew right away that their "Moose" be a moose in my project!
LOL!!!!
Log Cabin blocks are so versatile.
Playing around with the layout, I was able to build some great spaces for...
...fusible appliques from this book.
It's been on my shelf for a very long time, just waiting for that perfect project.

I tend to get stuck in a box when it comes to quilting.
So this time, I did a little pre-planning.
(I know...say it ain't "sew")
LOL!
I wanted to try something completely new and different from my usual.
So, I started with an online search of a black and white "pinecone" -"free clipart".
The sky really is the limit online. You can find just about anything your looking for
and make it your own, by combining designs, rotating or mirror imaging them.
Then printed it out, on a sticky back water soluble stabilizer.
This roll came from Marathon Thread. It's really a bargain from them,
and I look for them at every sew expo.
Stick it down on the quilt sandwich
and go crazy with free motion stitching.
It's really a lot like thread painting, only with lines to follow.
Once your all done, you wet down your stabilizer and watch the magic happen.
I did a small stipple around my pinecones, to finish off those blocks.
Then combined a variety of different quilting techniques,
on the rest of the quilt. What a fun way to play!

Hope you have enjoyed my little walk on the wild side,
 with "Northern Woods" fabrics.
They will begin shipping in April.
Be sure to visit my friend Vicki
to see what she has created with Northern Woods.
Today is the last day of the hop.
is the full schedule, just in case you missed anything.
;-)
Now, I've got a give away for one of you.
These Island Batik "Stash Builders", are the bomb!
What a great way, to build up variety in your "stash".
Unfortunately postage rates have gone thru the roof.
"Sew"
this give away is open to USA residents only,
unless your willing to pay the international postage.
My winner will be drawn Monday morning Feb 5th.
Good luck to you all!
Island Batik has a fabulous give away too. Click HERE

til next time...

  4. Northern Woods...OM gosh...could it have been any more ideal for you? Joan, this quilt is wonderful. Generally, I don't love animal quilts (Ok, I know I shouldn't be telling you, a moose lover.) but this is stunning. Your decision to do that pinecone stitching in the light areas was perfect. I never thought of using sticky water-soluble stabilizer for quilting in this way; thanks for the tut.

  5. WOW! You really went over the top with this amazing quilt. Perfect in every way and to have those wonderful Island Batiks really makes the quilt. Your quilting is amazing. Must look for that stabilizer ... does it really come off that easily? I'm always green with envy when I see those Island Batiks. Every time I see a new collection, I think it is the best ... all why I would love to sew with them too!

  10. Joan, I LOVE this! What a great way to use the fabric AND the applique is awesome! I think my favorite TIP is using the sticky back WSS for your quilt designs! I hope you don't mind me stealing that little tip! Being an embroidery digitizer, I have tons of stabilizer and love using the sticky based water soluble - especially for in-the-hoop appliques, but never thought about printing on it! Thanks for the awesome idea! brenda(dot)alburl(at)charter(dot)net
